My name is Kerstin Andresen (formerly Buzelan) also known as "Noody". Since 2013 I have been working freelance as a game artist, illustrator and 2D animator. I am from the city of Ingolstadt and currently live in Hamburg.

It felt super awkward, especially because we Germans hate our accent. 😅 I hope it's not too bad.

Because I am taking a break from streaming at the moment, I felt like showing some behind the scenes in a different format. Do you like it?

Roadside stations in Japan are super convenient! They're everywhere, often in scenic places, offering local specialties & a perfect place to relax. Open 24/7, clean restrooms, sometimes even showers!

We've spent most nights in our van at one and saw so many cool places! Some even had onsen! 🤩🇯🇵

注意 might have been one of the most useful and unseless words to know at the same time. xD It is everywhere, but if you don't know what you are supposed to be cautious of, it's kinda not helpful. Still, I think it's helpful what to look out for!

My first real D&D round!

Over the years, I played quite a few pen-and-paper role-playing games, mostly one-shot adventures with more unconventional settings and rules. But now I've started a new adventure in the world of Dungeons & Dragons—and boy, was I unprepared! 🤣 I completely underestimated how complicated the rules are compared to what I usually play.

But I had lots of fun, and the Dungeon Master really outdid himself preparing lots of props! Thank you @the_kimmsen! And thanks to my team members who gave a lot to life to their characters and made it even more fun! ( @tepporemers.books

I still have a migraine and am a day behind, so I thought, "Why not draw something ridiculously complicated?!"

I used Yamadera Temple as a reference, imagining how we will climb it. My hubby loves physical challenges, but I always nearly die. Afterward, it is always worth it, though—just like Inktober.

I really don't like the word "exotic" because it is very subjective and, coming from a Western standpoint, kind of problematic. So I went with the most unproblematic topic: food! My favorite "exotic" Japanese food is Natto (fermented soybean). I loved it ever since I was a poor student in Japan with only the tiniest kitchen. I had it nearly every day on rice with an egg. My husband isn't so keen on it, though.

I'm not particularly skilled at drawing scenery or cars, but I'll give it a try today! In Japan, they drive on the left side of the road, which is unfamiliar to us Germans. However, I trust my husband to handle it! I can't wait to explore the countryside by car for the first time!

We're going on a three-week camping adventure through Tohoku soon (Northern Honshu, Japan's largest island)! 🇯🇵🏔️ And I'm taking on the "Inktober" challenge, where I'll create a daily drawing based on an official prompt list! 🎨✍️

We're traveling light with just one backpack and one suitcase each. 🧳🎒 But it's going to be chilly, so we have to pack warm clothes. For example, Aomori in November can drop to 4°C at night! ❄️🥶 But we'll be sleeping in a cozy camper van and only be there in the beginning of November. 🚐🍂 So it should be fine.

But fitting everything in requires some clever planning, including designated laundry days. 🧺👕

Did I forget anything? 🤔

Counting in Japanese is insanity 🫠

A little excursion about the counting system(s) in Japanese. This is one of the toughest parts of the language, but good news is that you can get away with using the generic counter, especially if you are a beginner.

Do you enjoy ear cleaning?🦻✨️

In the West, we grow up with the idea that you should never put anything in your ear to clean it. However, in Asia (and particularly in Japan), it is common to clean your ears using an "ear rake." This is because Asian people tend to have mostly solid earwax that needs to be cleared occasionally.

As a result, there are parlors that offer "ear spas," where they clean your ears using a small camera and even trim your ear hair. 😬 And the best part: You can watch the procedure on a screen! You also receive a reflexology massage of the ears and a light head and neck massage. I don't have solid earwax, but I've always enjoyed using Q-tips on my ears because it simply feels good. 🤭

I visited Bonita Bonito in Tokyo years ago, and it remains one of the best spa treatments I've ever experienced!

🌸 The Best Season to Visit Japan? 🍁

Most people flock to Japan in the spring to catch the breathtaking Sakura (cherry blossoms). It’s a season full of magic, but it’s also when Japan can be the most crowded and expensive.

What many don’t realize is that autumn in Japan is just as stunning. The vibrant foliage, with its fiery reds and oranges, creates a serene atmosphere that’s perfect for exploring. We love visiting in October or November when the weather is still mild, and the crowds are thinner.

Just be sure to avoid typhoon season unless you’re okay with the possibility of spending a few days indoors!

Gestures in Japanese 🤙👌✌️

My most confusing experience was with the "come here" gesture, because it looks like the Western "shoo!" (go away) gesture. I had a very awkward situation once when the lady from the international office wanted me to come in, but I thought she was shooing me away. 🤭

(Note, some of these gestures are not exclusively used by Japanese people, but can be found throughout Asia.)

The magic word: ✨️ Kore ✨️

On my travels with my fiancé (who doesn’t know Japanese), I realized that there is only one word that he needs to know to order. And that is "Kore". It means "this" and though it isn’t very polite, if you don’t want to delve deeply into Japanese, this one will be sufficient to order. (And I promise, no one will be offended.)

Can't read Japanese? No problem! 🆘️💪

Let me teach you how to ask for an English menu! A lot of places offer one, but beware that they often don't have everything on it and might even be a little overpriced. 🤭

The whole phrase is
英語のメニューがありますか。
Eigo no menyū ga arimasu ka.

It is more polite to say it like this, but the shorter way will also be understood and is easier for most travelers.

How many people are in your party? 🎉👯‍♂️

The first thing you'll hear after an enthusiastic "Irasshaimase" (Welcome) will be the question of how many people are in your party. You can either show it with your fingers, say it out loud, or both! Here is a little cheat sheet on finger counting in Japanese as well as the counting words for "people," because Japanese has its own set of words depending on what you count!

Many restaurants in Japan have exact replicas of their food in the front window. So, to know what a restaurant is offering, just go window shopping and see what triggers your appetite!

🍢 Famous Foods in Japan and Their Origins 🍲

Each region in Japan has its own delicacies, so make sure to try the local specialty wherever you are!

When I was living in Kyushu, some friends served me raw chicken, claiming it to be the famous food of the area. It was very strange to eat and difficult to swallow, and to this day I'm not sure if people really eat it that way or if they were just trying to prank me. 😅
